Job summary

Alistair Group in Durban is seeking a skilled truck mechanic to diagnose faults, perform repairs on heavy truck systems, and conduct electrical inspections to keep the fleet in peak condition. You will troubleshoot issues, replace faulty components, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

This role requires strong problem-solving, a valid driver licence, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team, including on-call breakdown support when needed.

Qualifications

• Matric or Technical College equivalent.
• Valid driver licence.
• Experience with Howo Sinotruk 371, Foton Auman 430 AMT or similar brands.
• Experience with heavy truck and trailer systems 24 volt.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Time oriented and punctual, manage time effectively.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
• Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Respond promptly to roadside breakdown calls and provide on-site mechanical assistance.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and troubleshoot issues: consult with drivers to understand reported problems.
• Perform repairs and component replacement: fix or replace faulty parts on engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, axles and hydraulics.
• Conduct routine electrical inspections to keep vehicles running in peak condition.
• Complete safety and compliance checks: inspect vehicles to meet regulations.
• Maintain accurate records: document all work, parts used and time logged using fleet systems.
• Work with colleagues: communicate with managers and colleagues to explain problems and repair recommendations.
• Adhere to safety standards: follow safety protocols and keep the work area clean and organized.
