Placements24 is seeking an experienced Heavy Goods Vehicle driver for the Durban, KwaZulu-Natal port. The role entails safe operation of container trucks and haulage equipment within port premises and on designated routes.

You will perform pre-operational checks, load/unload cargo, and maintain logs. The position requires port/industrial experience, a PDP and clean driving record, with flexibility for shifts, weekends, and holidays.

About the Role

Our client, a major player in the South African port and logistics sector, is seeking a skilled and experienced Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Driver to join their vital operations at the Durban, KwaZulu-Natal port. This role is essential for the smooth flow of goods within the port and to surrounding distribution hubs. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of large commercial vehicles, including container trucks and specialized haulage equipment. Key Responsibilities

• Operate heavy goods vehicles, including articulated lorries and container trucks, safely and efficiently within the Durban, KwaZulu-Natal port premises and designated routes.
• Perform pre-operational checks on all vehicles, ensuring they are in safe working condition and compliant with regulations.
• Securely load and unload cargo, including containers and palletized goods, adhering to specific handling procedures.
• Navigate port infrastructure and traffic, demonstrating excellent spatial awareness and defensive driving skills.
• Maintain accurate logs of movements, deliveries, and vehicle inspections as per company and regulatory requirements.
• Communicate effectively with port authorities, dispatchers, and other personnel to coordinate movements and resolve any issues promptly.
• Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures within the port environment.
• Report any defects, incidents, or delays immediately to the relevant supervisor.
• Assist with basic vehicle maintenance and cleaning as required.

Requirements

• Valid Professional Driver's Permit (PDP) and appropriate HGV license (e.g., Code 14).
• Proven experience operating heavy goods vehicles, specifically in a port or industrial environment.
• Knowledge of port operations, container handling, and relevant safety protocols.
• Clean driving record with no serious traffic violations or accidents.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including shifts, weekends, and public holidays, as required by port operations.
