Job description

St Alban’s College, a leading independent boys’ high school in South Africa, is hiring a hardworking Handyman. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of work across the campus.

Job Overview

The Handyman is responsible for all repairs, maintenance, and renovations across college facilities and residential properties, requiring a diverse skill set in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, and masonry, while also managing daily tasks like clearing common areas, fixing safety hazards, moving furniture, liaising with staff, and flexibly supporting other departments as operationally required.

Responsibilities
Property Maintenance & Repairs
  • Conduct routine, preventative, and scheduled maintenance on all college buildings, venues, hostels, and residential properties.
  • Perform timely repairs to occupied units and prepare properties (including cleaning and repairs) during term breaks.
  • Conduct regular inspections to proactively identify maintenance problems and potential safety hazards.
  • Respond promptly to emergency maintenance calls as directed.
  • Ensure all work areas are left clean and tidy upon completion of each job.
Administration & Work Management
  • Prioritise work orders to complete all assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Liaise and schedule with staff, tenants, and teachers to gain access for repairs.
  • Accurately complete and submit daily work records, job assignment sheets, and unit turnover checklists.
  • Keep job cards updated daily, meticulously recording all spares and materials used before submitting them for completion.
  • Assess material and spare part requirements for each job and submit requests to the office for ordering.
  • Ensure all tools are available and in good working order before commencing work.
  • Adhere strictly to the job card procedure for the issuance and return of all materials and store tools.
  • Maintain personal responsibility for all individually issued tools, ensuring they are well-looked after.
  • Promptly return all excess materials and tools (in clean, good condition) to the stores with the correct documentation.
Teamwork & Service
  • Supervise maintenance assistants when authorised, ensuring tasks are completed to the required standard.
  • Flexibly assist other departments and team members with general tasks as operationally required.
  • Ensure the relevant staff member or “client” is satisfied with the completed work.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12
  • Completion of a technical course / certificate hat demonstrates technical skillset.
  • 2 – 3 years as a handyman or artisan assistant (Electrical / mechanical)
  • Ability to use hand tools, portable electric tools, and power tools.
  • Building maintenance experience.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Be physically fit and able bodied
  • Ability to work weekends and public holidays
