Job summary

A leading mining company in Gauteng seeks a Group Head: Rock Engineering to provide expert geotechnical leadership, develop strategies, and ensure compliance. This Senior Director role requires extensive experience in geotechnical management, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to influence across teams. Preference is given to designated groups and adherence to the Employment Equity Act is expected.

Qualifications

  • Minimum ten years senior hard rock managerial experience.
  • Experience in underground conventional and mechanised mining operations.
  • Knowledge of mining safety legislation.

Job description
The Group Head: Rock Engineering

Rock Engineering provides expert geotechnical leadership, primarily in terms of oversight, advisory and guidance to the operations, capital projects, studies and business development departments.

Rock Engineering will lead improvements in geotechnical capacity, strategy, design, and control systems to enhance safety and operational performance.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
  • Requisite NQF level 7 or higher qualification in either Geology or Engineering with specialization in Rock Engineering.
  • Chamber of Mine's Advanced Strata Control certificate required.
  • SANIRE and SAIMM membership are advantageous.
  • GDE, MSc, MEng, MBA, MBL or B qualification will be an advantage.
  • Minimum of ten years senior (departmental head) hard rock managerial experience required.
  • Experience in both underground conventional and mechanised mining operations.
  • Sound knowledge of financial- and project management principles.
  • Knowledge of the Mining Code of practice, mining safety legislation and numerical modelling programmes required.
  • Sound analytical skills and ability to interpret data.
  • Strong scientific leadership, planning, decision making and execution skills.
  • Good communication, presentation, report writing, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills with a proven track record of effective teamwork and leadership.
  • Ability to influence beyond authority.
  • Highly self-motivated, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Expert / In-depth knowledge of advanced geotechnical tools and methodologies.
  • High level of computer literacy.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide Rock Engineering leadership to ensure safe responsible execution.
  • Develop a group Rock Engineering Strategy and implementation thereof.
  • Evaluate current geotechnical ground control strategies, designs, methods and Code of Practices, assess the geotechnical risk and provide guidance for improvement.
  • Contribute to Group Strategy development and geotechnical input into Business Planning processes.
  • Conduct incident investigations and make recommendations to promote a learning organization and prevent repeats.
  • Undertake geotechnical due diligence reviews.
  • Ensure adherence to company governance, policies, procedures, standards, statutory and legal compliance.
  • Remain current with technological advances and develop a technology Implementation roadmap and drive implementation.
  • Conduct internal and peer audits of the Group operation's geotechnical functions.
  • Provide geotechnical input into studies and Competent Persons Reports.
  • Develop a succession plan for the Rock Engineering function across the Group and drive associated development plans.
  • Present to the Board and Board sub-committees on geotechnical matters.
