Role Overview
The Group Financial Accountant is a key junior management role within the Finance Department, responsible for all aspects of project accounting on a standalone and consolidated basis. The role involves all aspects of Group Financial Reporting, Financial Planning and Analysis, and Tax, rotating between these departments on a periodic basis. Output will be included in published external reporting, as well as reports presented to executive management and the Board of Directors. Key focus areas include consolidations and financial reporting, budget preparation and monitoring, treasury management, financial modelling and tax.
Responsibilities
- Group and joint‑venture consolidations, accounting and reporting to external shareholders on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
- Project accounting and reporting for inclusion in group consolidated results published externally on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
- Assist with the financial planning and analysis process, preparing budget workbook templates and consolidating budgets from various budget holders.
- Interrogate the accuracy of budgetary information prepared by other departments.
- Analyse and track budgeted costs against actual costs.
- Prepare and submit periodic facilities compliance requirements for Group companies.
- Contribute to the preparation of internal and external reports such as Group Financial Statements, CFO reports and Management's Discussion and Analysis.
- Review and monitor financial reporting packs prepared by finance departments across the Group.
- Prepare complex accounting for unique financial transactions that arise during project operations and communicate such accounting to relevant departments.
- Prepare tax calculations and tax returns for South African subsidiaries, and review tax calculations and returns for companies in other jurisdictions.
- Monitor work performed by other junior members within the department.
- Communicate with external stakeholders such as accounting service companies in Barbados and Luxembourg.
- Maintain signatories and access to accounts.
- Help with due‑diligence requests, collating required supporting information for new business opportunities, M&A and group‑wide financing transactions.
- Submit all work in a timely manner to prevent adverse consequences for the listed company due to non‑compliance with external stakeholder requirements.
Qualifications
- Chartered Accountant (South Africa) with a minimum of 2‑year post‑qualification experience.
- Experience within the mining industry.
- Experience with complex accounting treatment of financing transactions and the treatment of pre‑production mining costs and deferred revenue.
- Experience in accounting for revenue in the mining industry and remeasurement of contract receivables.
- Experience in the budgeting process.
- Experience in the treasury administration process.
- Advanced skills and knowledge in consolidations preparation within a multi‑currency, multi‑jurisdictional environment.
- Preparation of reports that are externally published and provided to a multi‑faced stakeholder base.
- Forecasting and budgeting for mining companies not yet in an advanced stage of production.
Key Performance Activities
- Operate on a rotational basis between Financial Reporting, FP&A and Tax.
- Conduct group and joint‑venture consolidations and reporting to external shareholders.
- Assist with budgeting and variance analysis.
- Prepare compliance and tax documentation.
- Provide timely reporting and communication to stakeholders.
