Graduate Architect Job Specification
I. Core Responsibilities & Duties

The Graduate Architect assists the project team and registered architects through all phases of design and construction, ensuring projects are functional, safe, aesthetically pleasing, and meet client objectives and regulatory requirements.

  • Design and Drawing Production:
    • Assisting in the preparation of concept designs, schematic drawings, and design development documents.
    • Producing highly detailed architectural drawings, blueprints, and specifications using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software (e.g., AutoCAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software (e.g., Revit).
    • Creating 3D models and renderings to visualize designs and aid client presentations.
  • Documentation and Compliance:
    • Conducting site research, zoning, and code analysis to ensure design compliance with local building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards (e.g., ADA, LEED, fire codes).
    • Compiling documentation for planning, permits, and building control applications.
    • Assisting with the preparation of tender documents and contract administration.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Working in multidisciplinary teams and coordinating with structural engineers, mechanical/electrical engineers, quantity surveyors, landscape architects, and contractors.
    • Participating in internal team meetings, client meetings, and consultant discussions to gather requirements and present design proposals.
  • Site and Project Support:
    • Conducting regular site visits to check on construction progress, resolve on-site issues, and ensure work is carried out according to the design plans and specifications.
    • Assisting in managing project timelines, budgets, and overall project documentation.
II. Required Skills and Qualifications
A. Education & Professional
  • Education: A professional Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from an accredited university program.
  • Experience: Previous internship or work placement experience in an architectural firm is highly desirable.
  • Registration: Eligibility for, or active enrollment in, the structured professional experience/licensure program for the relevant jurisdiction (e.g., a formal internship or training period leading to a Part 3 equivalent).
  • Portfolio: A strong professional portfolio demonstrating design innovation, technical competency, and graphic presentation skills.
B. Technical (Hard) Skills
  • BIM/CAD Proficiency: Mastery of industry-standard software such as Revit, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD.
  • Design Visualization: Proficiency with tools like SketchUp, Rhino, and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
  • Construction Knowledge: Foundational knowledge of building systems, construction methods, materials, and detailing.
  • Code Familiarity: Basic understanding of local building codes, zoning laws, and accessibility standards.
  • Analytical & Numerical: Ability to apply mathematical principles to design and construction calculations.
