Job description

AECOM is seeking a proactive and people‑focused GIS Team Leader to support and grow a highly skilled team working on advanced GIS programming and online solutions. This role combines strong technical capabilities with leadership responsibilities focusing on team coordination, development and strategic alignment.

This position offers a hybrid work schedule that includes both office and remote work opportunities and can be based in one of the South Africa centers: Centurion (Pretoria), Durban or Bellville (Cape Town).

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support a high‑performing GIS team focused on system and application support, asset reporting and online GIS development.
  • Coordinate project priorities, timelines and deliverables in alignment with business needs.
  • Facilitate communication between the GIS team and other departments or stakeholders.
  • Promote a collaborative and innovative team culture.
  • Support the professional development of team members through coaching, feedback and career planning.
  • Help define and refine team processes, tools and documentation standards.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for team growth and capability development.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of eight (8) years of experience in GIS or related fields with exposure to programming and online GIS platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience in team coordination or leadership roles.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead through influence and empathy.
  • Familiarity with GIS technologies such as ArcGIS Online, web mapping and automation tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and foster a positive team environment.
Preferred Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of eight (8) years of experience in GIS or related fields with exposure to programming and online GIS platforms.
  • Experience in system and application support, especially in asset reporting or similar domains.
  • Comfortable coordinating tasks, tracking progress and adapting plans based on team and stakeholder feedback.
  • Familiarity with tools or practices that support team organization and communication (e.g. task boards, regular check‑ins, iterative planning).
  • Leadership or coaching certifications are a plus.
