About the Role

Our client is a prominent civil engineering firm with a strong presence in Tembisa, Gauteng , and they are actively seeking a skilled Geotechnical Engineer to play a key role in their major development projects. This position involves managing and executing geotechnical investigations, analyses, and design for a diverse range of projects, including large-scale residential developments, commercial structures, and transportation infrastructure. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the ground conditions are thoroughly understood and accounted for in the design phase, mitigating risks associated with soil and rock mechanics. This is a hands‑on role requiring significant fieldwork, laboratory coordination, and detailed reporting. The individual will work closely with senior engineers and project managers, contributing essential expertise to ensure project feasibility and safety. We are looking for a candidate who is detail-oriented, possesses strong analytical skills, and has a keen understanding of South African geological conditions.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, execute, and manage geotechnical site investigations, including drilling programs, CPT, and trial pits.
• Interpret borehole logs, laboratory test results, and in‑situ test data.
• Perform detailed geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, and seismic analyses.
• Design foundations (shallow and deep), retaining walls, and earthworks, considering soil‑structure interaction.
• Prepare comprehensive geotechnical investigation reports, design reports, and technical specifications.
• Provide geotechnical recommendations and design input for infrastructure projects.
• Liaise with clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities on geotechnical matters.
• Oversee the geotechnical aspects of construction, including foundation installation and earthworks supervision.
• Develop and implement ground improvement strategies where necessary.
• Ensure compliance with relevant South African geotechnical standards and regulations.
• Mentor junior geotechnical engineers and technicians, fostering their technical development.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering.
• Professional registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.) with ECSA is required.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, focusing on site investigation, analysis, and design.
• Proficiency in geotechnical software such as Plaxis, GeoStudio (SLOPE/W, SEEP/W), or similar.
• Strong understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and foundation engineering principles.
• Experience with various site investigation techniques and laboratory testing.
• Excellent report writing and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and meet deadlines.
• Familiarity with the geological conditions in the Tembisa, Gauteng area is beneficial.
• A proactive attitude towards problem‑solving and risk management.
