Job summary

The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in Durban invites applications for two PhD training positions in Basic and Translational Sciences. Successful candidates will develop a proposal within the programme and pursue independent research under supervision.

Funding covers 40 months from November 2026, with registration at a SA university. The project focuses on drug-resistant TB, rapid diagnostics, and whole genome sequencing to understand mutations and transmission.

Qualifications

• MSc degree in Biomedical Sciences, Medical Microbiology, Cell and Molecular Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related field.
• Practical experience in mycobacteriology and basic microbiology labs.
• Working knowledge in bioinformatics and genomics is a merit.

Responsibilities

• Develop a PhD proposal nested within the AHRI programme and carry out independent research.
• Investigate prevalence of drug-resistant TB and associated risk factors.
• Perform whole genome sequencing to characterize mutations and transmission dynamics.
