This position can be based in one of our major East Coast port locations including Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney or Melbourne, however highly qualified candidates located elsewhere may also be considered.

Why You’ll Want to Join Us

This is a role with real influence. As part of our national Training and Marine Standards function, you’ll help build the skills, confidence and readiness of Masters, Mates and Check Masters across Australia. You’ll work closely with port teams, simulator specialists, technical SMEs and the Marine and Audit Team to strengthen operational performance and ensure regulatory and contractual compliance.

How You’ll Make a Difference

Reporting to the Regional Marine Manager based in Newcastle, NSW, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering training and competency development programs for Masters, Mates and new recruits, including simulator‑based training.
  • Developing and delivering emergency towage, escort towage and non‑standard towage training packages.
  • Acting as the subject matter expert for offshore, emergency, escort and non‑standard towage operations.
  • Maintaining training materials, SOPs and simulator documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Supporting ports with training needs analysis, development of port training plans and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Providing marine operational guidance, including vessel mobilisation support and input into Port Navigational Standards.
  • Contributing to internal and external audit activities and identifying training solutions to address systemic issues.
  • Participating as SME in safety investigations, Learning Teams and reviews of marine incidents and operational risks.
  • Supporting national and global marine projects, including port optimisation initiatives and technical input into tenders.
What You’ll Bring

To thrive in this role, you’ll bring:

  • Experience as a Tug Master on ASD, tractor, transverse or offshore towage vessels.
  • Offshore towage experience as a Master or Mate, supported by a minimum Master 45NC qualification.
  • At least five years of towage experience, including exposure to emergency and escort towage operations.
  • Strong knowledge of vessel operations, simulation techniques and practical training facilitation.
  • A solid understanding of Australia’s regulatory environment, certification processes and operational compliance.
  • Working knowledge of marine systems, standards and expectations across harbour and offshore operations.
  • Experience developing training materials or delivering simulator‑based programs (highly regarded).
  • Internal ISM Auditor capability or willingness to gain this qualification.
  • Excellent time management, organisation and the ability to work independently while supporting a dispersed team.
  • Strong communication and engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively with crews, leaders and operational stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail, analytical thinking and strong computer literacy to support continuous improvement.
