Job summary

Anglo American invites applications for a Fire Prevention Assistant to support the Fire Prevention Officer in implementing and maintaining the fire prevention and maintenance program at our Northern Cape unit. The role focuses on safety, equipment readiness and compliance with fire standards.

You will assist in safety drills, inspections, and reporting while collaborating with the SHEPS & Contractor Management team to ensure safe operations and rapid emergency response.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or SAQA-recognised equivalent.
• Registered with SAQCC.
• Fire Prevention & Risk Assessment or HIRA certification.
• Hazmat Awareness & Operations certification.
• Basic Ambulance Assistance (Advantageous).
• SA Driver's licence.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to health and safety requirements and promote good housekeeping to create a controlled risk environment for the team.
• Discuss violations and unsafe conditions with the section’s representative, provide recommendations, and give instructions on fire safety practices.
• Assist the Fire Prevention Officer in preventing and extinguishing fires quickly and with minimal damage.
• Equip firefighting equipment and substances to prevent and minimise property damage and ensure safety of employees, contractors, and visitors.
• Assist in organizing and conducting emergency drills, including fire drills, to oversee and assess evacuation and emergency response procedures.
• Inspect new and existing buildings and structures to ensure compliance with applicable fire standards, codes of practice and regulations.
• Conduct daily inspections, maintenance and tests of firefighting equipment, ensuring compliance with Codes of Practice.
• Inspect firebreaks, evacuation routes, and assembly points in all buildings and environments.
• Inspect hazardous material storage areas for compliance with laws and regulations.
• Maintain fire prevention records and reports; provide information for inspections and recommendations for eliminating fire hazards.
• Recommend corrective actions to supervisors and coworkers; respond to mine emergencies.
• Perform other duties as instructed by the Fire Prevention Officer.
