Purpose of the role

Responsible for site buildings and services upkeep, fabrication, maintenance and installation of steel structures, plumbing installations and repairs, safety equipment maintenance and inspections, site welding needs support and contractor management for external service work in area of responsibility.

Minimum Requirements
  • Relevant NCV / NQF level in mechanical engineering or similar
  • Trade test in Boiler making or Welding
  • Minimum of 3 years in FMCG environment working as a boilermaker or welder
  • Working knowledge of operation and maintenance of boilers, air compressors and HVAC systems
  • Experience with building maintenance and regulations
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Utilize various methods like TIG, MIG, or arc welding to join metal pieces, ensuring strong and durable bonds.
  • Choose the correct materials for welding and prepare them according to the blueprint, which may involve cutting, shaping, and cleaning.
  • Perform routine maintenance on plumbing systems, including checking for leaks and ensuring proper drainage.
  • Conduct routine inspections on buildings and related facilities and perform repairs as necessary.
  • Support utilities with basic equipment inspections and maintenance.
  • Check various areas of the plant to identify and resolve general and building condition deviations.
  • Identify and execute Best-In-Class and continuous improvement projects around the plant.
  • Understand technical drawings to determine the project's specifications and ensure accurate execution.
  • Fabricate metal structures, assemble components, and repair damaged metal parts.
  • Support new and ongoing projects in line with role duties and responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to PPE protocols and all safety regulations related to hot work, confined space entry, working at heights, ammonia handling, pressure vessels and other relevant regulations.
  • Conduct or supervise contractors in the execution of maintenance and inspections on safety equipment such as emergency showers, fixed & portable ladders, portable power tools, lifting equipment, etc.
  • Complete job cards and return to supervisor or Maintenance Planner for capturing and sign off.
  • Keep detailed records of inspections, maintenance, and repairs executed across areas of responsibility.
  • Operate lifting machinery, welding equipment and other equipment required for maintenance tasks.
Safety Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to PPE protocols and all safety regulations related to hot work, confined space entry, working at heights, ammonia handling, pressure vessels and other relevant regulations.

  • Familiarity with regulations governing hot work, confined space entry, pressure vessels, working at heights and machine safety (ISO).
Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve issues with mechanical and piping systems.
Communication and Teamwork
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with other technicians and supervisors.
Documentation and Record-Keeping
  • Accurate record-keeping of maintenance activities and inspections.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in various environments, including cold temperatures, at heights, confined spaces and with heavy lifting.
