Job description
What We Are Looking For

The Explosive Manager will be responsible to work closely with Management to develop, prepare, and implement explosives safety policies and procedures, while cultivating a strong explosives safety culture across the Wellington site. The role includes serving as the legal appointee for the site, ensuring full compliance with statutory requirements and explosive area compliance standards. Responsibilities cover the management of magazines, movement of explosives between sites, and burning grounds operations, with strict adherence to zoning, segregation, and operational safety protocols.

Key Performance Areas
  • Develop, prepare, and implement explosives safety policies and procedures, and cultivate a strong explosives safety culture across the site.
  • Serve as the primary contact for all explosives safety matters pertaining to RDM Wellington and Liaise with regulatory departments regarding explosive incidents.
  • Review and approve all manufacturing and product documentation for Wellington operations.
  • Appraise and implement new safety regulations in collaboration with other explosives managers as they relate to RDM manufacturing sites.
  • Review accident and incident reports and provide technical input on explosives-related incidents.
  • Ensure identified corrective solutions are implemented in area of responsibility.
  • Conduct explosives-related audits and inspections.
  • Facilitate interaction with RDM Wellington Academy to ensure explosives training aligns with regulatory and legislative requirements.
  • Liaise and coordinate NIXT Conference, SANAS, and training for RDM, and represent RDM at NIXT and SAFEX.
  • Manage and control all explosive waste destruction.
  • Maintain Explosive Area Compliance, including zoning, segregation, and operational safety standards.
  • Adheres and implements Rheinmetall Denel Munitions Policies and Procedures and ensures compliance to ISO Standards with respect to SHE/Quality/Environmental/Energy.
What Qualifications You Should Have
  • A minimum of UNISA SLP-1 to SLP-4 is required for applying for this position. The following modules must be completed:
    • PIIE01P, PIIE04S, PPSE01B, PPSE02C, PPSE05F, PPSE07H, PCPL03F, PCPL04G, PCPL05H, PCPL07K, PCPL08L, PETE01J, PETE03L, PERE04M, PETE08R
  • Additional, Engineering degree
  • Proven training and experience in ordnance manufacture, usage, storage, or testing.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working with explosives, ordnance, or ammunition (development, manufacturing, usage, and destruction).
  • Strong decision-making ability, motivated and self-disciplined.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of SHE/OHS/Quality Systems advantageous.
  • Valid driver's licence.
  • Computer literate (MS Office) with good presentation skills.
