Job description

An Associate Level Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) focused on the mining sector is required to complement the Environmental Planning and Advisory (EPA) team. The candidate will primarily offer leadership to the sub-team in the EPA team focusing on business development in the mining sector specifically. The role will also require the candidate to provide an independent environmental assessment role on large-scale mining related projects locally and internationally requiring approvals in terms of local legislation and international best practices

Qualifications
  • An Honours or higher degree in a relevant environmental sciences discipline. A Masters, with a research component is preferable.
  • A minimum of 10 years work experience; however, applicants with up to 15 years’ working experience in an environmental consulting environment may be given preference.
KEY COMPETENCIES AND GENERIC SKILLS:
  • Between 10- and 15-years’ experience in local Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Management Plans and Compliance Auditing projects and/or ESDD consulting assignments.
  • Significant experience with mining projects is a requirement
  • EAPASA Registration is a requirement.
  • Experience in the industrial sectors is beneficial.
  • Good working knowledge of the South African environmental legislation with in-depth knowledge of the MPRDA/NEMA requirements.
  • Understanding of broader environmental and social issues (i.e. water, air quality, waste management, biodiversity, social, etc.)
  • Ability to travel in Sub Sahara Africa (outside of South Africa) if required.
  • Strong technical report writing skills, producing professional reports in fluent English.
  • Strong Project Management skills.
  • Must have acted in a leadership capacity before.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Strong organisational skills.
Strong preference will be given to:
  • Candidates that have 10+ years’ experience in local mining related EIAs.
  • Candidates that have published scientific papers in relevant subject matter.
  • Candidates who are EAPASA registered.
Responsibilities
  • Lead / prominent role in delivering Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, Basic Assessments, Environmental Management Plans, Gap Analyses, and Compliance Auditing projects
  • Leading local and international (Africa) projects
  • Where required, provide a support role to the delivery of Environmental and Social Due Diligence Assessments in line with South African and international lender standards
  • Financial Management of projects in the Mining Team
  • Resource Management of Mining Team
  • Provide a mentoring and guidance role with the aim of developing WSP’s Mining Environmental team
  • Knowledge and application of International Standards, such as IFC Performance Standards, AfDB Safeguards and Equator Principles, are beneficial
  • Engagement with Clients and other stakeholders at the senior executive level and providing support and guidance on critical ESIA aspects affecting their development projects
  • Key client/account relationship management, participation in marketing and business development activities, and development of proposals
  • To work both independently and in a team
