About the Role

Our client, a leading facilities management company, is looking for an experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Officer to oversee and enhance the safety protocols within its cleaning services division in Pretoria, Gauteng, ZA. This role is crucial for ensuring a safe working environment for all employees and maintaining compliance with stringent health and safety regulations. The EHS Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring EHS programs specifically tailored to cleaning operations, including chemical handling, equipment safety, and waste management. The ideal candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, and possess a strong understanding of relevant legislation and best practices in occupational health and safety within the cleaning industry. This is an on-site position, requiring a dedicated professional committed to fostering a culture of safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS policies and procedures for cleaning operations.
• Conduct regular site inspections and risk assessments to identify potential hazards.
• Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, recommending and implementing corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation and standards.
• Deliver EHS training to cleaning staff on topics such as chemical safety, equipment operation, and emergency procedures.
• Manage the safe storage, handling, and disposal of cleaning chemicals and waste materials.
• Develop and maintain emergency preparedness and response plans.
• Monitor and report on EHS performance metrics to senior management.
• Liaise with regulatory bodies and external auditors on EHS matters.
• Promote a strong safety culture throughout the cleaning services department.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in an EHS role, with specific experience in the cleaning or facilities management sector.
• Demonstrated knowledge of South African health, safety, and environmental legislation.
• Proven ability to conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and develop corrective actions.
• Experience in developing and delivering safety training programs.
• Strong understanding of chemical safety, hazardous waste management, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and reporting skills.
• Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
• Proficiency in relevant software for EHS management and reporting.
• A relevant qualification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, SAMTRAC) is required.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to upholding safety standards.
