Job Description: Enrolled Nurse (Frail Care Facility)

Position Summary
The Enrolled Nurse (EN) is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered nursing care to elderly residents within a frail care facility. Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the EN will support residents with daily healthcare needs, ensure comfort and dignity, and contribute to maintaining a safe and compassionate care environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Provide direct nursing care to residents in accordance with individual care plans.
- Monitor and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, etc.) and report abnormalities.
- Administer medication as per scope of practice and facility protocols.
- Assist with wound care, basic treatments, and chronic condition management.
- Observe and report changes in residents’ physical, emotional, and cognitive conditions.
Resident Support & Daily Living Care
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, and feeding.
- Promote independence while ensuring safety and dignity of residents.
- Provide emotional support and companionship to residents.
- Manage continence care and mobility assistance, including safe transfers and use of mobility aids.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and nursing documentation.
- Report incidents, injuries, or changes in condition promptly to the Registered Nurse or Unit Manager.
- Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and facility documentation standards.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols.
- Ensure all equipment is used safely and correctly.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic working environment.
- Follow Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with Registered Nurses, Caregivers, and multidisciplinary teams (e.g., physiotherapists, doctors).
- Participate in handover processes and team meetings.
- Support and guide care workers where applicable.
Family & Resident Engagement
- Communicate effectively with residents and their families regarding care and well-being.
- Promote a person-centered care approach respecting cultural and individual needs.
Minimum Requirements
Education & Registration
- Diploma/Certificate as an Enrolled Nurse.
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an Enrolled Nurse.
Experience
- Minimum 1–2 years’ experience in a frail care, geriatric, or long-term care setting preferred.
- Experience working with elderly patients, including dementia and chronic illnesses, advantageous.
