Qualifications

Macsteel Tube & Pipe is seeking an experienced and dynamic hands‑on Engineering Manager to lead and manage all engineering, maintenance, utilities, and technical services within the Tube and Pipe manufacturing plant. The role ensures optimal plant reliability, safety, compliance, cost control, and continuous improvement, supporting production targets and Macsteel’s operational excellence objectives. The Engineering Manager is also accountable for ensuring that all factory buildings, infrastructure, and facilities are safe, legally compliant, certified, well‑maintained, and audit‑ready at all times.

This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll manage a team, driving operational excellence while maintaining the highest safety and compliance standards.

Requirements

NQF Level 7 3 year degree / advance diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

GCC Engineer certification (Government Certificate of Competency – Factories)

10 Years' Engineering Experience Including
  • 8 – 10 years operational experience in an Engineering or Maintenance environment
  • 5 years Management experience or Senior Engineering Role
  • 5 years operational experience in steel manufacturing, tube & pipe mills, heavy industry or metals processing

ECSA registration (advantageous)

Code EB driver’s license

Advanced proficiency in SAP, MS Office Suite

Intermediate CAD drawing skills

Strong problem‑solving, planning, and decision‑making capabilities

Proven ability to manage budgets, KPIs, and capital projects

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as the GMR 2.1 appointee, ensuring all machinery operations meet OHSA requirements
  • Develop and execute the planned and preventative maintenance strategy for all plant equipment
  • Ensure maximum equipment availability and reliability through effective maintenance planning and execution
  • Lead breakdown analysis, root‑cause analysis and corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Manage mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, automation, and civil engineering activities
  • Plan and execute capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects, including new equipment installations, upgrades, and plant expansions
  • Prepare technical specifications, budgets, timelines, and business cases for capital projects
  • Oversee contractors, vendors, and OEMs to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to specification
  • Maintain accurate asset registers, lifecycle plans, and replacement strategies
  • Drive a zero harm safety culture within the engineering and maintenance teams
  • Ensure plant equipment, cranes and lifting equipment are legally certified and inspected
  • Participate in audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations
  • Ensure factory and building legal and regulatory compliance including fire safety, utilities, services and infrastructure
  • Work closely with Production, Quality and Warehouse teams to support daily manufacturing output
  • Ensure engineering services align with production schedules and minimise downtime
  • Support process optimisation, yield improvement, and reduction of scrap and rework
  • Assist with technical problem‑solving related to product quality and process stability
  • Prepare and manage the engineering and maintenance budget
  • Control maintenance costs, spares inventory and contractor expenditure
  • Negotiate and manage service agreements and supplier contracts
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising safety or reliability
  • Maintain engineering documentation, maintenance systems (CMMS), drawings and SOPs
  • Ensure accurate reporting of KPIs such as equipment uptime, MTBF, MTTR and maintenance costs
  • Provide regular technical and performance reports to plant and senior management
