Qualifications

About the Role

Our client, a key player in the energy sector located in Soweto, Gauteng , is looking for a dedicated Electrical Engineer with a specialization in Power Quality and Protection. This on-site role is crucial for ensuring the stability, reliability, and safety of the electrical network within their operational area. You will be responsible for analysing power quality issues, designing and implementing protection schemes, and conducting system studies to maintain optimal network performance. The successful candidate will possess a strong technical foundation in power systems, excellent analytical skills, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of electrical integrity. Key Responsibilities

• Monitor, analyse, and diagnose power quality issues such as harmonics, voltage sags/swells, and transients.


• Design, implement, and maintain protection schemes for power distribution systems, including setting and coordinating protective relays.


• Perform detailed power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and stability analysis.


• Utilize power quality monitoring equipment and analysis software to identify root causes of disturbances.


• Develop recommendations and solutions to mitigate power quality problems and improve system reliability.


• Ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations pertaining to power quality and protection.


• Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to address network issues and implement improvements.


• Assist in the specification and selection of power system protection equipment and power quality mitigation devices.


• Prepare technical reports, findings, and recommendations related to power quality and protection studies.


• Contribute to the development and updating of protection and power quality guidelines and procedures.

Requirements

• B.Eng or B.Sc in Electrical Engineering.


• Minimum of 5 years of experience in power systems engineering, with a focus on power quality and protection.


• Demonstrated experience in power system analysis and simulation software (e.g., ETAP, PSS/ADEPT, DigSilent PowerFactory).


• Proficiency in understanding and applying protection relay settings and coordination principles.


• Experience with power quality monitoring equipment and analysis tools.


• Knowledge of relevant South African National Standards (SANS) and international standards (IEC, IEEE) related to power quality and protection.


• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in Soweto.


• Egress registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) or Technologist (Pr.Tech.Eng) is preferred.
