Electrical Engineer - Heavy Current - Gauteng, Sandton

Education & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current specialization preferred)
• Professional Engineer registration with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) - Mandatory
• Post-graduate qualification in Electrical Engineering (advantageous)

Experience

• Minimum 8-10 years of experience in electrical engineering with focus on heavy current applications
• Extensive experience in substation design and construction (HV / MV / LV)
• Proven track record in electrical reticulation and overhead line design
• Experience with power system protection and control systems
• Project management experience on electrical infrastructure projects

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in ReticMaster software - Essential
• Advanced knowledge of electrical design software (AutoCAD, ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory)
• Strong understanding of electrical protection systems and relay coordination
• Knowledge of switchgear, transformers, and power system equipment
• Familiarity with SCADA systems and automation technologies

• Lead the design and development of electrical substations from concept to commissioning
• Perform heavy current electrical system design and analysis

• Create detailed electrical drawings, schematics, and technical specifications
• Conduct load flow analysis, short circuit studies, and protection coordination studies
• Oversee substation construction projects from inception to completion
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, mechanical, and instrumentation engineers
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and quality deliverables
• Interface with clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians
• Review and approve electrical designs and calculations
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and safety regulations
• Stay current with emerging technologies and industry best practices
• Conduct design reviews and technical audits
• Ensure all work meets SANS, IEC, and IEEE standards
