The role will be based from our offices in Spartan, Kempton Park.

Purpose of the role

The EHS Coordinator will ensure compliance with Sandvik’s Safety Policies, Procedures, Processes, and all legal requirements in terms of the Occupational Health & Safety Act 85 of 1993 and its Regulations; compliance where applicable on Sandvik sites/facilities and customer sites in terms of the Mine Health & Safety Act 29 of 2004 and its Regulations; contractor obligations under Sandvik’s Services Level Agreement; and the development, implementation and maintenance of systems & processes for sustainability and continual improvement.

Job responsibilities
  • Safety inductions, onsite work contractor management and documents reviews.
  • Contractor risk assessment reviews.
  • Incident investigations.
  • Induction of new employees throughout the year.
  • Annual January safety inductions, coordinating employees’ medicals and ergonomics training.
  • Monthly EHS facility inspections.
  • Near‑miss and hazards management – ensuring all reported hazards and near‑misses are investigated and closed.
  • EHS plan monitoring and updates – ensuring all actions on the plan are completed.
  • Conducting corrective actions on internal and external EHSQ corrective‑action requests.
  • Conducting weekly facility inspections with managers as part of EHS leadership goals.
  • Monitoring that all EHS behaviours are loaded on EHS by all relevant managers.
  • Updating EHS on all environmental data quarterly; EHS plan monthly; EHS leading indicators monthly; hazards and near‑miss updates and follow‑up to ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Conducting feedback meetings with employees on the outcome of EHS surveys and ensuring corrective actions are put in place.
  • Consolidating EHS survey feedback data and scheduling meetings with managers for resolutions.
  • Quarterly evacuation drills – coordinating evacuation drills and maintaining reports of the drills.
  • Follow‑up on action plans from the quarterly management review meetings.
Qualifications & Experience Requirements
  • Completed Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Safety Management Training Course (SAMTRAC).
  • Diploma in Environmental Management or any other related qualification.
  • Hazards Identification & Risk Assessment.
  • 3+ years experience as a safety professional in the engineering industry.
  • 2+ years experience in risk management.
  • 2+ years experience as an ISO auditor (advantageous).
  • Incidents/accidents investigation certification (advantageous).
  • Knowledge of approaches, tools and techniques for recognising and resolving operational problems.
  • Knowledge of processes, tools and techniques for assessing and controlling an organisation’s exposure to risks.
  • General manufacturing company EHS rules and procedures.
  • Workplace EHS rules and procedures (workplace induction).
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Basic environmental management principles.
  • Hazard identification, risk assessment and control.
  • Conduct effective planned inspections.
  • Participate in effective SHEQ meetings.
  • Use and understand the limitations of required PPE.
  • Ability to establish and build healthy working relations and partnerships with clients and peers.
  • Results‑orientated individual.
Technical & Soft Skills
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and report‑writing abilities.
  • Familiarity with regulatory environments (OHS Act).
  • Highly proficient in MS Office (and able to compile graphs).
  • Good MS Outlook etiquette.
  • Standard‑ISO Environmental ISO Health and Safety Standard.
