Job summary

BGC Central Vancouver Island in Ladysmith, BC is seeking an Early Years Support Worker to promote inclusion and provide individualized care for children with extra support needs.

You will collaborate with families and staff to develop care plans, support social and communication skills, and maintain a safe, structured environment. Relevant certifications and experience in licensed childcare are required.

Qualifications

  • ECEA Diploma, Community Support Worker Certificate, or BI certification preferred (education and experience considered).
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate approved by Community Care Facilities Licensing.
  • Experience in a licensed childcare facility with children needing extra support.
  • Strong knowledge of early child development, age-appropriate communication, and positive behavior management theory.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized life skills, social skills, and behavior management support.
  • Participate in assessment, goal setting, and documentation of individualized Care Plans with families and staff.
  • Create a predictable structure and de-escalate complex or anxious behaviors with empathy and strategy.
  • Attend to physical, emotional, and medical needs, including medication administration per policy and assisting with lifts/transfers if required.

Job description

Early Years Support Worker

Be the champion for inclusion this season! BGC Central Vancouver Island is seeking an empathetic, skilled, and dedicated Early Years Support Worker (EYSW) to join our team in Nanaimo. In this role, you will use your knowledge of child development and positive behavior support to help children with unique needs fully integrate, play, and thrive alongside their peers.

What's in it for you?
  • Wage: $22.14 per hour

  • Hours: Part-Time Contract 10 hours per week, Monday - Friday.

  • Schedule: Shifts scheduled between 7:00 am - 5:30 pm.

  • Location: Ladysmith, BC.

  • Position Note: This rewarding role is funded in partnership with the Child Development Centre (CDC).

About the Role

As an EYSW, your mission is inclusion. You will support the early learning program as a whole while providing direct, individualized care and predictable structure for children navigating developmental delays, behavioral challenges, or extra support needs. You are the bridge that helps every child build social skills, communication strategies, and life skills in a safe environment.

How You'll Make an Impact
  • Individualized Support: Provide tailored guidance in life skills, social skills, and behavior management. This may include creating visual tools or using approved technology to support communication.

  • Collaborative Planning: Participate in the assessment, goal setting, and documentation of individualized Care Plans, partnering with families, staff, and community networks.

  • Safety & Stabilization: Create a predictable structure with clear expectations. Recognize and safely de-escalate complex or anxious behavioral situations with empathy and strategy.

  • Holistic Care: Attend to the physical, emotional, and medical needs of the children, including administering medication according to policy, and assisting with lifts and transfers if required.

  • Team Collaboration: Contribute to team effectiveness through direct communication, attending staff meetings, and maintaining open lines of communication with community partners and professionals.

What You Bring
  • Education: ECEA Diploma, Community Support Worker Certificate, or Behavioral Interventionist (BI) certification is preferred (a combination of education and experience will be considered).

  • Safety: Valid First Aid/CPR certificate approved by Community Care Facilities Licensing.

  • Experience: Previous experience working in a licensed childcare facility with children who require extra support needs is a major asset.

  • Core Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of early child development, age-appropriate communication, and positive behavior management theory.
