Requirements :

  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing, R425, or equivalent qualification that allows registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC), as a Professional Nurse and a qualification in Psychiatric Nursing. Must have a Qualification in Advanced Psychiatry or Postgraduate in Mental Health. Must have a qualification in Nursing Management or Health Service Management which is accredited by SANC. A minimum of Nine (9) years’ experience in Nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing. At least 4 years of the above period must be appropriate recognisable experience at an Assistant Manager level in a Psychiatric setting. Must have four years’ experience in management of forensic patients. Current registration with SANC, management experience in service planning [MS1.1], development and delivery. Vast knowledge of Mental Health Care Act no 17 of 2002, Criminal Procedure Act 77, 78 and 79(2), Child Justice Act, Child Protection Act, PFMA. Computer literacy and a valid Driver`s License. Good communication skills. Knowledge of Public Service Act and relevant legislative Framework, Nursing Act and SANC Regulations and the National Nursing Strategy 2020/21-2025/26.

Duties :

  • Facilitate and strengthen Forensic services to support de-institutionalization. Coordinate Forensic Psychiatry at all levels of care and report to the CEO. Monitor the implementation of strategic plans in terms of Observandi and State Patients. Align individual performance to the strategic objectives of the unit. Provide technical support to management on Forensic services. Monitor and evaluate the waiting lists of Observandi and state patients. Collaborate and liaise with the SAPS, Correctional Services, Justice department and the Directorate of Public Prosecution. Support regular audit systems and the Nursing Manager. Oversee daily nursing activities, Conduct Quality Rounds, manage budgets and ensure efficient resource allocation. Ensure that recruitment, mentoring, staff development and appraisal of the staff that report to you is done. Participate in the CPD activities according to the SANC CPD with the Nursing Team. Monitor the admission procedures of State patients and Observandi, reclassification, conditional discharges and full discharges of State patients. Ensure the development and implementation of forensic policies, procedures and guidelines. Provide reports to the CEO, National Forensic Directorate as well as Provincial Mental Health Directorate.
