Deputy General Counsel – Insurance & Regulatory Affairs (Contract 3-6 months)

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Senior Legal Counsel – Insurance & Regulatory Affairs to lead legal and regulatory initiatives across our property & casualty, reinsurance, program business, surplus lines, and risk exchange structures.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Deputy General Counsel – Corporate Legal Affairs, providing enterprise-wide legal coverage and collaborating with cross‑functional stakeholders to align legal strategies with business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Legal Counsel & Risk Management
  • Provide expert legal advice on underwriting, claims handling, product development, and distribution strategies.
  • Guide legal considerations for both admitted and non‑admitted insurance markets, including E&S lines.
  • Structure and support reinsurance, risk exchange, and captive arrangements in compliance with applicable laws.
• Regulatory Compliance & Strategy
  • Oversee regulatory compliance programs and ensure adherence to state and federal insurance laws.
  • Serve as the primary legal contact for state Departments of Insurance, including managing inquiries, filings, and examinations.
  • Advise on NAIC model laws and evolving regulatory trends impacting the insurance industry.
• Enterprise Collaboration & Legal Alignment
  • Collaborate closely with underwriting, claims, compliance, and finance teams to ensure coordinated legal support.
  • Proactively identify legal and regulatory risks and develop mitigation strategies.
• Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead and mentor a team of attorneys and compliance professionals focused on insurance and regulatory matters.
  • Foster a high‑performing, collaborative, and ethical legal culture.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
• Active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Minimum 10 years of legal experience with a strong focus on insurance law, including:
  • Property & casualty insurance.
  • Reinsurance and captive structure.
  • E&S lines and surplus lines markets.
  • MGA and program business operation.
• Deep familiarity with NAIC model regulations, state insurance regulatory environments, and insurance distribution channels.
• Demonstrated ability to manage regulatory relationships and support enterprise compliance function.
• Exceptional communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.

Contract Details

• Full‑time: ~40 hours per week
• Contract length: 3‑6 months minimum with potential for renewal
• Work setup: Remote; must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior in‑house legal experience at an insurance carrier, MGA, or reinsurer.
• Experience with multi‑state regulatory filings and licensing.
• Strategic thinker with a strong business acumen and the ability to influence cross‑functional decision‑making.
