Job summary

G7 Renewable Energies, a South African renewable energy developer, is seeking a Junior Data Scientist to help identify opportunities and improve operational efficiency across wind, solar PV and energy storage projects. The role focuses on data-driven decision making and implementing scalable models.

You will pull, clean and merge data, build predictive models in Python, develop visualizations in Power BI, and work with stakeholders to translate insights into actions.

Qualifications

• BSc or MSc in Operations Research, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or Mathematics.
• Advantageous: Postgraduate qualification in data science.
• 3-5 years' experience in a related role and experience in applied machine learning in industrial contexts.

The Data Scientist must apply data science and machine learning techniques to help identify business opportunities, solve complex problems, and drive innovative data-driven solutions. The role involves working closely with stakeholders to identify opportunities for using data to improve processes and make informed decisions. Additionally, the Junior Data Scientist must aim to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of our renewable energy systems and is expected to help drive the adoption and advancement of technologies and new practices within the organisation.

Role-Specific Responsibilities

• Some of the data-related tasks that a Junior Data Scientist might tackle on a day-to-day basis include:
• Pulling, merging and analyzing data
• Looking for patterns or trends
• Must be Python literate and understand the foundational concepts of machine and deep learning,
• Trying to simplify data problems and developing predictive models
• Building data visualizations
• Writing up results and pulling together proofs of concepts
• Perform ad-hoc data mining and gather large sets of structured and unstructured data from several sources.
• Use various statistical methods, data visualization techniques to design and evaluate advanced statistical models from vast volumes of data.
• Build AI models using various algorithms and in-built libraries.
• Automate tedious tasks and generate insights using machine learning models.

Data Collection, Cleaning and Manipulation:

• Collect, clean, and manipulate large datasets to extract and share insights with the business.
• Perform ad-hoc data mining to identify trends and patterns.
• Generate predictive models using the available data.
• Build and maintain specific datasets, such as G7's scouting dataset.
• Procure and process relevant data to update the dataset.
• Develop new filter parameters to enhance the dataset's usefulness.

Advanced statistical & Machine Leaning Techniques:

• Apply advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to build models.
• Deploy models for accurate predictions and recommendations.
• Evaluate and improve models based on performance feedback.
• Handle backend development, server deployment, and front-end usability of the model framework.
• Add new applications and features to enhance the functionality of the models.

Reporting:

• Apply advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to build models.

Qualifications & Experience

• BSc. or MSc. in a relevant field (Operations Research, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or Mathematics)
• Advantageous: Post Graduate qualification in data science or related fields
• Experience in managing and negotiating contracts as well as disputes
• 3-5 Years’ Experience in a related role
• Experience in applied machine learning in industrial contexts
• Working experience in Power BI
