Our client in the banking industry is looking for a hands‑on Data Engineer to develop, maintain and support data integration, ETL and data processing solutions.
The ideal candidate will have strong practical experience in SQL, SSIS/ETL, batch processing and data warehousing, with the ability to investigate technical and data‑quality issues and engage effectively with business and technical stakeholders. Successful candidates must be based in Gauteng.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and support SQL and SSIS/ETL solutions from source extraction through transformation, validation and loading.
- Develop and maintain scheduled batch data‑processing pipelines.
- Perform data cleansing, transformation, validation and source‑to‑target reconciliation.
- Investigate and resolve SQL, ETL, data‑quality and batch‑processing issues.
- Implement appropriate error handling, logging, monitoring and recovery processes.
- Work with business users, source‑system owners, developers, DBAs and project managers to understand requirements and resolve data issues.
- Document source‑to‑target data mappings and communicate technical issues, risks and dependencies.
- Contribute to data architecture discussions and work effectively within an Agile environment.
Essential Requirements
- Strong practical SQL development experience, including complex queries, joins, CTEs, subqueries, stored procedures, functions, aggregations and window functions.
- Strong SSIS / ETL experience, including Control Flow, Data Flow, transformations, Lookups, error handling, logging and incremental/full data loads.
- Experience with batch processing and scheduled data pipelines, including job dependencies, file processing, failure recovery and large data volumes.
- Understanding of data warehousing and data integration concepts, including OLTP/OLAP, staging, data warehouses, data marts, source‑to‑target flows and multiple source systems.
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills with the ability to independently investigate root causes.
- Experience working in an Agile environment (Scrum/Kanban).
- Strong communication skills and confidence engaging with clients, business users and technical teams.
Production Support Requirements
This role includes participation in a rotational production support schedule. The successful candidate must be willing and able to:
- Participate in an on‑call roster every third week.
- Respond to after‑hours callouts, including late‑night and early‑morning alerts.
- Support and troubleshoot issues affecting the nightly batch process to ensure successful completion.
- Work collaboratively with operations and infrastructure teams to resolve time‑sensitive issues under pressure.
- Maintain support logs, escalated critical incidents and ensure accurate handovers.
- Support the availability and continuity of enterprise data services required by business users and systems.
