A state correctional service in South Africa is seeking motivated individuals for the role of Correctional Officer. The position provides extensive training and opportunities for career progression within a diverse work environment. Applicants do not need prior experience but should demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, resilience, and integrity. This role includes a range of benefits and responsibilities crucial to the rehabilitation and safety of the community.
Post training, salary range for Shift Work is $86,013 - $94,751 pa + super. Annual salary increase within this range in accordance with the Correctional Officers Agreement 2023. During training (13 weeks), salary is $64,583 pa + 12% super.
In addition to salary + super, Correctional Officers attract:
Experienced Correctional Officers may be eligible for recognition of service including above base salary on commencement and reduced training requirements.
Correctional Officers work 76.0 hours per fortnight, on a fully rotational roster. This includes day and night shifts, public holidays and weekends. During training, start and finish times will vary in accordance with training requirements however can expect to be day shifts Monday to Friday.

Correctional Officers come from a wide range of backgrounds. They join us because the work is rewarding, diverse and absorbing. Although it’s not without its challenges, being a Correctional Officer delivers a large amount of job satisfaction and the knowledge that they are playing an active role in the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners, while also contributing to the safety of the Tasmanian community.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate resilience, maturity and flexibility along with high levels of literacy, numeracy and excellent computer skills and digital literacy. They will also be assessed against the Values of the Department of Justice where all employees are to act with integrity, respect and accountability within workplaces which are inclusive and collaborative.
Prior training, experience and qualifications in corrections are not required. However, applicants should be able to demonstrate attributes in the following areas: team orientation, very high-level interpersonal skills, integrity, strength and stamina, resilience, respect, supportive, accountable, tolerant, assertive, adaptable, decisive, dependable, courage, motivated, patient, objective, able to read people and situations and to think critically and problem solve.
Successful applicants will complete a 12 week training program with the Tasmania Prison Service at the Risdon site to help develop these skills and abilities and enable them to become professional and effective Correctional Officers. The training provides successful trainees with the opportunity to acquire a Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial) which is a nationally recognised qualification. Intrastate, interstate and overseas applicants may be eligible for relocation support.
During the recruitment process applicants will be assessed for their suitability to perform the duties of a Correctional Officer which also includes psychological and workforce health/fitness assessments as well as criminal history background checks.
