Overview

As a Consultant Microbiologist, you play a central role in supporting both clinicians and patients through thoughtful, expert consultation and the delivery of a dependable pathology service. This role combines specialist insight with the day‑to‑day leadership needed to guide a high‑performing laboratory environment. You will take the lead in shaping a service where people feel supported, equipped to grow, and confident in the quality of results that influence critical care decisions.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the laboratory to ensure high‑quality results that support critical care decisions.
  • Provide expert consultation to clinicians and patients, and maintain a dependable pathology service.
  • Promote a culture of quality, continuous improvement, and professional development within the team.
  • Engage with hospital clinicians, pharmacy, and infection control teams to support patient care and local diagnostic programs.
  • Contribute to continuous education within pathology and help attract and nurture talent to strengthen long‑term capability and succession pipelines.
Qualifications
  • MBChB, complemented by either an M.Med (Pathology) or FC Path SA (Microbiology).
  • Registered with the HPCSA as a Specialist in Pathology in Microbiology.
