Placements24 is seeking a Principal Research Scientist to lead pioneering research in condensed matter physics at our state-of-the-art laboratories in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. The role requires defining research directions, managing multi-year experiments, and collaborating with international teams.

The ideal candidate holds a Ph.D. with 10+ years of post-doctoral experience, strong leadership, and a proven publication record in quantum materials, superconductivity, or related fields.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics, Solid State Physics, or closely related field.
• Minimum of 10 years of post-doctoral research with distinguished record.
• Proven track record in quantum materials, superconductivity, magnetism, or topological states.
• Hands-on experience with low-temperature measurements, spectroscopy, diffraction, and related experiments.
• Strong theoretical foundation with data analysis and interpretation skills.
• Experience with computational modeling and simulation is highly advantageous.
• Excellent leadership, project management, and communication abilities.
• Proven ability to secure research funding and manage groups.
• Significant publication record in leading physics journals.

Responsibilities

• Define and lead high-impact research projects in condensed matter physics.
• Design, set up, and execute complex experiments at low temperatures and high magnetic fields.
• Analyze experimental data using theoretical and computational methods.
• Develop theoretical models and computational tools to interpret phenomena.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners on joint initiatives.
• Mentor junior researchers, postdocs, and graduate students.
• Publish findings in top-tier journals and present at conferences.
• Contribute to strategic growth of the physics research division.
• Manage research budgets and ensure efficient use of resources.
