Job Description
This second-line compliance role involves leading, supporting, and coordinating compliance activities across various business units and entities. The Compliance Manager will ensure adherence to applicable legislation by advising on regulatory changes, assisting with impact assessments and readiness, monitoring compliance, and reporting to Boards. The role also includes providing guidance on compliance requirements for new business initiatives across multiple FSPs and entities.
The core focus areas of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Overseeing the day-to-day 2nd line compliance activities for the relevant Old Mutual Business Units/Segments and Entities.
- Identify compliance focus areas and assists the business to build effective CRMP’s and documenting those in the risk management system (CURA)
- Monthly and Quarterly compliance feedback to the heads of the Group Functions and Quarterly 2nd line Compliance Reporting
- Co-ordinate and / or support areas of responsibility with regulatory change items
- Designs and delivers targeted compliance training interventions to business partners and relevant areas of responsibility. General support to the Group Compliance Team through monitoring and reporting activities as outlined in the Annual Group Compliance Monitoring Plan
- Provide 2nd line compliance sign-off on business documents and initiatives in line with regulatory requirements
- Ability to assess regulatory requirements against business processes and identifying areas of concern
- Sourcing of business and compliance requirements, including analysis and communicating impacts to management
- Identifies and manages stakeholders and their needs, while maintaining 2nd line independence
- Ability to support business strategies and fulfils an advisory role on key strategic projects
- Builds and maintains mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders
- Influencing the development and implementation of business controls to address compliance concerns
- Is a team player and supports an environment of continual improvement and education
- Individually accountable for managing own time, tasks and output quality within agreed timelines and KPI’s
- Drive, oversee and maintain the development and monitoring of Compliance Risk Management and Compliance Monitoring plans
- Reports on compliance breaches to entity Boards and BU/functional management teams and Senior Compliance Officer/Compliance Executive
- Provides compliance risk-related insights to business, including investigations into possible compliance breaches
- Facilitates resolution of compliance breaches
- Assists with the influencing of new legislative developments via industry committee stakeholders
- Assist with managing regulatory visits
- Leads a team, guides and directs team members to achieve operational excellence standards
- Creates a climate for optimal performance
- Demonstrates strong technology acumen, with the ability to leverage digital tools and emerging technologies—including AI and data analytics—to enhance compliance monitoring, reporting, and risk management processes.
Requirements
- Matric
- LLB Degree or FSCA recognised qualification
- Compliance specific qualifications (advantageous)
- 5+ years compliance experience in a financial services environment
- The ability to interact verbally as well as through written communication with senior level managers
- Highly competent in conflict resolution with the ability to successfully mediate across internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated leadership in navigating complex, highly regulated, and dynamic environments, with a strong ability to engage and guide teams toward shared success.
- Self-driven and accountable.
- Attention to detail, analytical and communication skills are a requirement for this role.
- Risk-Based Thinking: Skilled in applying a risk-based approach to compliance monitoring, reporting, and decision-making.
- Project and Change Management: Experience supporting compliance aspects of business change initiatives, including impact assessments and readiness planning.
- Ethics and Integrity Champion: Demonstrates high ethical standards and promotes a culture of integrity and accountability.
