Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

About the Role
We’re at a pivotal moment. After years of strong growth, our business is ready to scale into its next chapter. We’re seeking a visionary Chief Technology Officer to assess our legacy systems, lead the transition to a modern, AI-first architecture, and build the tools, structures, and teams that power innovation.
This is a strategic, hands‑on leadership role for someone who thrives at the intersection of technology and business. You’ll shape the tech vision, drive speed, resilience, and growth, and play a key role across the entire organisation. This isn’t just about keeping systems running—it’s about reimagining what comes next.
We have a strong development team and a uniquely South African platform, but the market is evolving rapidly. To stay ahead, we need a CTO who can drive transformation, innovation, and scale. Preferably from within the E‑Commerce environment, but not essential; it’s a massive nice to have.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and own the long‑term technical strategy and system architecture.
- Rebuild or replatform legacy systems into scalable, modular, API‑first architectures.
- Lead front‑end, back‑end, and data platform direction using modern stacks and tools.
- Collaborate with directors and potentially serve as a technology advisor at board level.
- Mentor the Head of Development, establish development processes, engineering culture, and performance expectations.
- Drive innovation across AI personalisation, big data platforms, and customer experience.
- Make build vs buy vs partner decisions with commercial ROI in mind.

Key Skills & Experience
- Architectural knowledge across modern cloud platforms, microservices, containerisation, and event‑driven systems.
- Deep understanding of large‑scale e‑commerce platforms (multi‑tenant, multi‑country, high concurrency).
- Proven ability to lead cross‑functional initiatives with product, marketing, finance, and operations.
- Hands‑on coding ability in modern frameworks.
- Business‑minded: cost‑to‑scale, margin impact, data ROI.
- Inspirational leader, respected by senior developers and teams.
Requirements
- BSc/MSc in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 10+ years of technical experience, 5+ at senior leadership level.
- Proven track record scaling high‑traffic e‑commerce or tech platforms.
- South African market knowledge preferred but not essential.
