A leading water research organization in Pretoria seeks a Chief Risk Officer to manage risk management operations and compliance. The ideal candidate will need a minimum of 10 years’ experience in risk management, with a focus on public sector regulations. The Water Research Commission (WRC) invites suitably qualified and experienced individuals to apply for the Pretoria-based position of Chief Risk Officer.
The WRC is a dynamic hub for water and sanitation knowledge, innovation, and intellectual capital, providing leadership and support for research, development and innovation of water and sanitation solutions.
It engages stakeholders and partners in addressing water and sanitation challenges and opportunities, which are crucial to South Africa's sustainable development and economic growth and is committed to promoting a better quality of life for all.
The WRC is a schedule 3A public entity and adherence to required legislation is imperative to the organisation's strategy and values.
This position calls for an independent, results‑driven strategic thinker who will be accountable for the risk management operations and compliance of the WRC.
The Chief Risk Officer will form part of the Office of the Chief Executive Officer and will report to the Executive: Operations.
The position will be responsible for providing strategic direction in implementing and performing ongoing management of risks, ethics, business continuity and compliance frameworks by leveraging people, processes and technology transformation opportunities.
This includes leading and managing compliance functions, risk management functions and ethics functions.
Applicants must be in possession of a three‑year NQF Level 7 qualification in Internal Audit / Risk Management / Accounting or a related field and must be a member of the Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA).
A post‑graduate qualification in a related field will be an added advantage.
A minimum of 10 years experience in risk management within the Public Sector is required, 5 years of which should be in a management position.
The applicants must have knowledge of legislative prescripts and frameworks governing public entities as well as all administrative processes and procedures (Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, Water Research Act, etc.).
Furthermore, the applicant must have knowledge of the Risk Management Framework by National Treasury, Corporate governance – King IV, COSO and ISO.
The appointment will be made in line with the WRC's employment equity plan.
