Job summary

About the job Business Development Manager - Global Law Firm - Sandton

Our client, a Global Law Fim based in Sandton, has an opportunity for an experienced Business Development Manager with a professional services background to further embed their global sector approach in the region. Strong emphasis is placed on understanding the dynamics of a multi-national firm and of the continent.

The role reaches beyond South Africa and includes working with stakeholders across the business to develop relationships and reputation into Sub Saharan Africa. The role will require some travel.

Key Functions
  • Responsibilities include working closely with the global BD team to support lawyers in all aspects of BD, deploying a wide portfolio of BD skills, including influencing strategy, client targeting, credentials materials and tactical marketing activity such as sponsorship and thought leadership.
  • Develop and communicate BD and marketing plans and positioning for South Africa and the Groups and Sectors primarily active in the region, further integrating them with firm strategy and priorities, tailoring global Group and Sector plans to the regional audience.
  • Work as part of the firms Africa Steering Group to better understand and develop relationships across Sub Saharan Africa, building connectivity, brand and profile directly and through intermediaries.
  • Develop and implement plans to build the profile and brand of the firm in South Africa through effective use of all communication channels including Out-Law, e-newsletter, media, social media, sponsorship, targeted events, conferences, industry networks, collaborating with the wider BD team (Groups, Sector, PR etc).
  • Manage delivery of a programme of BD activity against agreed plans, agreeing actions with partners, sharing best practice and facilitating collaborative working between offices, groups and sectors.
  • Work with the partners to identify the key influencers in the market (clients, targets, business organisations, intermediaries, media, etc.), develop an engagement plan to build profile and connectivity in the region and support partners to take the whole firm to conversations with these influencers, confidently and consistently.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Relevant marketing qualification (or working towards a relevant marketing qualification).
  • Team management and mentoring skills (including remote management).
  • Strong knowledge of the regional marketplace.
  • Experience of operating in a multi-site, multi-national, professional services environment.
  • Experience of undertaking a similar role in a partnership environment in South Africa.
  • Experience of supporting and delivering plans in line with agreed strategy in a partnership environment.
  • Experience of sector market segmenting, preferably with understanding of infrastructure/projects/energy.
