Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Set up and operate bottomer machines used to form, fold, glue, and finish the bottoms of paper bags or sacks.
  • Adjust machine settings such as glue application, folding guides, speed, tension, and print alignment according to job specifications.
  • Load paper reels, printed tubes, and consumables correctly to avoid misfeeds and waste.
  • Inspect bags during production for correct dimensions, glue strength, bottom formation, print alignment, and overall product quality.
  • Conduct routine quality checks per company standards (ISO / FSSC / SANS where applicable).
  • Reject or correct defective products and report recurring issues to supervisors or maintenance.
  • Monitor machine performance continuously to ensure smooth operation and consistent product output.
  • Identify machine jams, paper tears, glue issues, or mechanical faults and take corrective action promptly.
  • Maintain optimal running speeds without compromising quality.
  • Ensure correct materials (paper grade, glue, ink, cores) are used as per production requirements.
  • Minimize waste and record scrap levels accurately.
  • Properly store finished product and label pallets or bundles for traceability.
  • Perform routine cleaning, blade / glue nozzle checks, lubrication, and minor adjustments.
  • Report major mechanical or electrical issues to maintenance teams to prevent downtime.
  • Keep work area clean and organized.
  • Adhere to Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) regulations and company safety procedures.
  • Use PPE correctly and ensure guards, emergency stops, and lockout / tagout procedures are followed.
  • Maintain a safe working environment free from hazards such as paper dust build-up and exposed moving parts.
  • Complete production records, job cards, quality check sheets, and waste logs accurately.
  • Communicate production status during shift handovers.
  • Report material shortages, delays, or quality deviations in real time.
  • Work closely with helpers, quality inspectors, and shift supervisors to meet production targets.
  • Provide feedback on process improvements to enhance productivity and product consistency.
