BOILERMAKER – TRUCK & TRAILER WORKSHOP
Location: Port Elizabeth
Department: Workshop / Fabrication Section
Reports To: Workshop Foreman / Maintenance Supervisor

Overview

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Boilermaker to join our Truck & Trailer Workshop team. The successful candidate will be responsible for fabricating, repairing, and maintaining truck and trailer structures, chassis, load bins, and related components. This role requires precision, technical expertise, and a strong commitment to quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Fabrication & Welding
    • Fabricate, cut, shape, and assemble steel components for trailers, truck bodies, ramps, and accessories.
    • Perform MIG, TIG, and arc welding on various structural components.
    • Read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and blueprints accurately.
    • Fit, align, and secure components to ensure dimensional accuracy.
    • Manufacture brackets, mountings, guards, and reinforcements as required.
  • Repairs & Maintenance
    • Inspect and assess damage on trailers, chassis, and body structures.
    • Conduct crack repairs, frame straightening, and corrosion patchwork.
    • Replace damaged sections such as cross members, floors, and side rails.
    • Ensure all repairs restore structural integrity and meet workshop standards.
  • Workshop Operations
    • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
    • Operate tools and equipment safely (grinders, torches, plasma cutters, etc.).
    • Follow all Safety and PPE requirements.
    • Report material usage, job progress, and any non-conformances to the Foreman.
    • Assist mechanics and painters when fabrication support is needed.
  • Quality & Compliance
    • Perform self‑inspections to ensure high‑quality workmanship.
    • Adhere to company standards and SANS specifications.
    • Participate in toolbox talks and continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Accurately record all work done on job cards or digital systems.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Trade Test Qualification: Boilermaker (Red Seal or equivalent).
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years in a truck/trailer manufacturing or heavy vehicle workshop.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient in MIG, TIG, and arc welding.
    • Able to read and interpret fabrication drawings.
    • Knowledge of structural steel grades and welding procedures.
    • Experience in chassis, bin, and trailer frame repairs.
