Job description

An Independent School for Girls situated in Parktown, Johannesburg, seeks to employ an experienced, energetic, supportive and caring Boarding House Matron for Boarding with effect from 1 February 2026. Boarding at Roedean School is firmly based on being a ‘home away from home.’

This is a residential post in the Boarding House. The Boarding House Matron’s position involves working closely with other members of the Boarding staff, teaching, admin and auxiliary staff who all contribute to a nurturing and happy environment. The Boarding House Matron will be part of a team who provide a structured environment for those in their care, while never forgetting the need for the pupils to become responsible and independent, good global citizens.

Required Qualifications & Experience:
  • A BEd, or B Soc Science would be an advantage;
  • Must have no less than 3 years experience in a middle or senior position in a boarding school;
  • Have a sound working knowledge of MS Office suite;
  • Have proof of clearance against the Sexual Offenders and Child Protection Registry;
  • Have a valid driver’s license (PDP would be an advantage);
  • A valid first-aid certificate would be an advantage;
  • Have strong emotional intelligence and emotional resilience;
  • Problem solving ability;

  • High levels of integrity;
  • Great stress management skills;
  • Have an excellent command of English (both verbal and written;
  • Have a sound work ethic and ability to use initiative;

Responsibilities Summary would include:
  • To adopt a holistic view to children in their care, promoting the general progress and well‑being of the boarding student’s;
  • Creating a positive learning environment and motivate boarders to achieve their fullest potential;
  • Fostering a homely, purposeful and safe atmosphere within boarding;
  • Providing fair, consistent and compassionate support for the boarders at all times;
  • Looking after the boarders’ day‑to‑day needs in accordance with school policies;
  • Be an advocate of boarding across the wider school community;
  • Maintain an active interest in the academic progress of boarders;
  • Liaise closely with pastoral care, teachers, admin and auxiliary staff to ensure the smooth running of boarding;
  • Supervision of daily routines in the Boarding House and at mealtimes;
  • Observing and complying with the fire/safety regulations of the Boarding House;
  • Ability to undertake various administrative duties;
  • Be resident in the accommodation provided in the boarding house during term time.
