Job summary

Anglo American is seeking a Blasting Assistant to support drillers and explosives personnel, ensuring safe blasting operations and orderly work areas. You will assist with equipment, inspect blasting zones, and help maintain readiness of materials and vehicles.

This role sits in the Mining department in Kathu, Northern Cape, reporting to the Shift Supervisor. Requirements include Grade 12, a basic safety competency, and a valid SA Driver’s Licence Code B.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Competency A: an introduction to understanding safe declarations from Miners/Blasters is preferred.
• SA Drivers Licence Code B

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all safety and health standards and continuously promote good housekeeping.
• Assist extraction craft workers to ensure successful blasting operations and compliance with procedures and timeframes.
• Inspect blasting area and signal workers to clear the area to prevent injuries and damage to assets.
• Conduct repairs and maintenance of automotive and drilling equipment to ensure availability
• Arrange and prepare materials required for blasting operations and transport materials to excavation sites
• Assist the supervisor and co-workers according to their level/area of competence and follow company policies to achieve objectives.

Job Description

As Blasting Assistant your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

Safety, Health, and Environment

• Adhere to all safety and health standards and continuously promote good housekeeping.
• Active participation in SLAMs, HPHs, relevant Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.

Blasting Assistance

• Assist extraction craft workers such as earth drillers and operators to ensure successful blasting operations compliance with the necessary procedures, specifications, requirements, and timeframe whilst seeking to prevent injuries or damage to assets.
• Inspect the blasting area and signal workers to clear the area to prevent injuries and damage to assets and ensure that operations occur safely within prescribed processes, procedures, and standards.

Equipment Maintenance

• Conduct the necessary repairs and maintenance of automotive and drilling equipment to ensure availability
• Observed and monitored equipment operations during and after extraction to identify problems and initiate the necessary action to prevent equipment damage.
• Operate auxiliary equipment to assist when required.

Materials Transportation

• Arrange and prepare the materials required for blasting operations and drive, manoeuvre and navigate moving / mechanised equipment and vehicles to transport materials and parts to excavation sites.
• Unload materials, devices and machine parts into sound holes or equipment using hand tools to assist in the necessary blasting preparations.

Assistance

• Assist the supervisor and co-workers according to their level/area of competence and follow company policies when instructed or during the responsible person's absence to ensure the achievement of functional objectives.

This role is in Mining (MIN) department on a Band P6 (B-Upper) level reporting to the Shift Supervisor.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent
• Competency A: an introduction to understanding safe declarations from Miners/Blasters is preferred
• SA Drivers Licence Code B

Technical Knowledge

• Possess the necessary proficiency to be trained to operate auxiliary equipment. This aligns with the career path and succession planning goals of the Drill & Blast department.
• Knowledge of Safety standards.
• Understanding blasting procedures.
• Familiarity with equipment maintenance practices.
