Key Responsibilities
- Conduct guided birding tours for lodge guests showcasing local and migratory bird species.
- Share detailed knowledge of various species habitats and behavior.
- Maintain updated knowledge of local and regional bird species including other fauna and flora.
- Assist guests with bird photography and spotting techniques.
- Safely transport guests to and from birding sites and other lodge activities.
- Maintain and operate lodge vehicles according to safety and maintenance standards.
- Assist in planning field excursions and excursion logistics.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks around the lodge including minor repairs, painting, plumbing or electrical troubleshooting as required.
- Assist other departments when necessary contributing to smooth lodge operations.
- Ensure all guiding equipment is maintained, cleaned and functional.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a birding guide, eco-guide or nature guide.
- Extensive knowledge of South African and KZN bird species.
- Valid South African driver s license with a clean driving record.
- Basic maintenance and handyman skills (electrical, plumbing, carpentry or general lodge upkeep).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physically fit and able to navigate rugged terrain.
- Passionate about wildlife conservation and environmental education.
Preferred
- Previous lodge or safari guiding experience.
- First aid certification.
- Experience with birding apps, guides or scientific recording.
