Job description
Overview

Do you like being active and making a positive impact in the life of a child? Howard County Recreation and Parks is currently seeking energetic, talented, positive and motivated staff for our Before and After School Child Care Programs located at local elementary schools throughout the County, outside of Columbia. Work hours are Monday thru Friday; 7-9:30 AM and 3-6 PM. Candidates must be available for every morning OR afternoon for program consistency.

Benefits and Qualifications

Free training and PTO leave available for all staff 18 years old and up. For those who work both morning AND afternoons, Monday-Friday, part-time health benefits and paid leave (vacation, sick and personal) may be available after a probationary period. Previous leadership or teaching experience preferred, but all candidates must be comfortable being active with children, being a positive role model and participating in activities daily. Special consideration will be given to candidates with a background in education, recreation, exercise and/or sports science or related fields.

Daily Responsibilities
  • Planning and/or leading organized games
  • Hands-on projects - arts/crafts, healthy food activities and science projects
  • Preparing snack following Office of Child Care regulations
  • Assisting with homework and other duties as needed
Salary

Salary range is $17 and up depending on experience:

  • Aide($17) - Minimum age 16. Must be able to successfully take CPR/First Aid, Center Aide Orientation, Including All Children and the ADA and other Office of Child Care required classes.
  • Teacher ($18) – Minimum age 19; Must have current 90 hour child care certification (45 hours in Growth & Development AND 45 hours in School Age Curriculum or equivalent) AND 400 hours supervising school aged children; starting pay rate $18.00
  • Teacher Director Qualified ($19) - Minimum age 19; Must have 135 hour child care certification (45 hours in Growth & Development, 45 hours in School Age CurriculumAND 45 hours in Child Care Administration or equivalent) AND 400 hours supervising school aged children; starting pay rate $19.00
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check, state, and federal

All applicants must have OR be able to obtain certification in Standard First Aid, CPR, Basic Health & Safety Training and other Office of Child Care classes.

  • The before and after school care programs are licensed through the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Office of Child Care (OCC) and staff are required to take continuing education units each school year (12 hours) per school year.
  • Candidates must also be able to supply any of the following to get qualified by OCC: High school diploma, unofficial college transcript and/or child care course certificates.
