Job summary

A leading food safety consultancy based in Cape Town is seeking an experienced Food Safety Auditor to conduct thorough audits at retail food establishments. Your role includes evaluating food safety practices, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Ideal candidates should have a Diploma or Degree in Food Science and at least 2 years of experience in food safety audits. A valid driver's license and passport are required.

Job description

Job Purpose

Conduct food safety audits at retail food establishments, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, client‑specific requirements, and internal procedures.

Key Responsibilities

The auditor will assess food safety practices, report findings, and support continuous improvement in food safety management.

  • Conduct food safety audits in line with client and AssureCloud standards.
  • Evaluate food premises, hygiene practices, and documentation against audit criteria.
  • Perform opening and closing meetings with store management and complete Client Confirmation Slips while resolving disputes professionally.
  • Prepare accurate audit reports and ensure quality checks before submission.
  • Maintain audit KPIs and meet client turnaround times.
  • Apply risk assessment principles during audit planning and execution.
  • Travel to audit sites, including weekends (overtime policy applies).
  • Ensure audit tools and PPE are clean, functional, and compliant.
  • Follow company policies for travel and accommodation logistics.
  • Observe food preparation, storage, handling, and transport practices.
  • Interview staff involved in food safety processes.
Qualifications

Diploma or Degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Microbiology, or Biotechnology.

Environmental Health qualifications are not preferred.

Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience conducting food safety audits or inspections.
  • Proven experience in client‑facing roles and dispute resolution.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of food safety regulations, HACCP, and hygiene practices.
  • Familiarity with the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 54 of.
  • Knowledge of PPE compliance and risk assessment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and report‑writing skills.
  • Strong verbal communication and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to client‑specific protocols.
Preference and Other
  • Preference will be given to employment equity candidates.
