Job description
Overview

Assistant Manager - South Africa Urban Resilience & Just Energy Transition Partnership Support Programme.

The Urban Resilience Programme (URP) and Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) Support Programme are FCDO's flagship programmes in South Africa to deliver inclusive, sustainable and climate‑resilient economic development in cities.

The URP supports improved urban management, township economic development and resilient infrastructure; the JETP Support Programme aims to leverage donors' pledges to support South Africa's transition from coal to clean energy.

URP and JETP are independent programmes with separate FCDO counterparts and reporting channels. The role is based in Cape Town, with potential travel within South Africa.

ASI is recruiting for an Assistant Programme Manager to support the URP and JETP Support Programme teams.

The role will work alongside the existing Assistant Programme Manager and report to the Programme Manager and Senior Programme Manager. The successful candidate will be a core member of the programme management unit, helping ensure programmes run smoothly and efficiently.

South African and international candidates are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with day‑to‑day operational, financial and administrative tasks, including the approval and management of invoices, onboarding of associates, minute taking, and coordination of actions.
  • Mobilise field operations and logistics, including project office facilities, local procurement of goods and services, and workshops.
  • Develop an understanding of technical and programme delivery processes for URP and JETP Support Programme; support their implementation and contribute to the achievement of objectives.
  • Ensure activities are implemented in line with company policies and procedures, internal targets, and in compliance with client contracts and regulations.
  • Foster and maintain strong working relationships with the programme team, partners and other stakeholders to ensure smooth programme implementation.
  • Assist in activity planning, monitoring and management of work plans and outputs (intermittently).
  • Support quarterly written reports to the client and conduct quality assurance of deliverables, technical documents and management reports.
  • Contribute to communications outputs and undertake research to support technical delivery of the programmes.
  • Capture and disseminate lessons learned and contribute to risk management and problem solving.
Key Relationships
  • ASI staff including the Senior Programme Manager, Programme Manager, and existing Assistant Programme Manager.
  • Other ASI staff across Finance, Legal & Compliance, IT, and People & Talent teams.
  • Alliance partner organisations in South Africa and URP and JETP Support Programme teams (Team Leader, URP Lead, JETP Lead).
Job Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in economics, political science, international development, business management, or other relevant field from an internationally recognised university.
  • 1–3 years of experience in programme management within donor‑funded programmes, ideally with FCDO.
  • Demonstrated initiative, client‑orientation, risk‑taking, and ability to work in complex, time‑pressed contexts.
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team‑working skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and financial software.
  • Outstanding written and spoken English.
