The Cape Town Holocaust and Genocide Centre (CTHGC) is dedicated to educating the public about the Holocaust and other genocides, preserving historical records, and fostering a culture of human rights, tolerance, and memory. The Centre works closely with local and international partners to provide educational programs, exhibitions, and public engagement initiatives. This is a hands-on and collaborative position within a small, dedicated team and will play an essential role in managing and preserving the Centre’s historical collections.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Archival Management & Preservation: cataloguing, maintaining and managing all archival items, preparing items for storage, managing additions to existing collections, digitising archival materials, responding to research requests.
- Curatorial responsibilities: assisting in curating in-house exhibitions and presentations, manage temporary/travelling exhibitions and collaborating with staff on content for exhibitions.
- Liaison and Representation: Coordinate with the Kaplan Centre at UCT and collaborate with Johannesburg and Durban Holocaust Centres on joint projects as well as international institutions. Liaise with funders and stakeholders, including preparing reports for the Claims Conference.
- Collaboration and Departmental support: working closely with Education and Promotion teams ensuring archival and curatorial materials support the Centre’s initiatives as well as supporting other in-house projects, through research, exhibition development and archival input.
- Administration: contribute to grant applications and funding proposals relating to archival and digital initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience
- Work experience and industry exposure
- Degree or Diploma in History, Archival Studies, Museum Studies or a related field
- Proven experience in archival management, curating and digitisation
- Knowledge of Holocaust, genocide history and human rights issues is advantageous
- Exhibition development and project management experience ideal.
- Strong Communication and Interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Comfortable liaising with diverse stakeholders, including funders and academic institutions.
- Collaborative and respectful team player with the ability to work independently.
- Excellent Administration and Organisational Skills
- Attention to detail and commitment to historical accuracy
- Strong planning and time management skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities efficiently.
- Must be able to work on-site in Gardens, Cape Town.
- Experience liaising with institutional partners locally and internationally
- Respect for confidentiality and sensitive historical material.
Additional Details
Hours of work: 20 hours per week (either half days or over 3 days a week). Salary range: R13,000 – R15,000 dependant on experience.
