Job summary

takealot.com is seeking a Software Engineer (Android Storefront) to join our Mobile Engineering team in South Africa. You will design, develop and refine new features, focus on robust Android UX, and collaborate across the team to deliver high-quality releases.

Candidates should have 3+ years of mobile dev experience, with at least 2 years in native Android using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. The role supports hybrid working and a vibrant learn-from-leaders culture at Takealot Group.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering.
• Minimum 3 years in software/technology; 3+ years mobile development with 2+ years native Android.
• Strong CS fundamentals and knowledge of Android lifecycles and UI patterns.

This position reports to the Mobile Engineering Manager

Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

• Help design, develop and refine new features
• Locate and resolve bugs and crashes
• Brainstorm new ideas and concepts
• Work with teammates on design, code reviews, and estimation

Qualifications & Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering and a minimum of 3 years experience in a software/technology environment is required.
• In the event that you do not have a Bachelor’s Degree or an Advanced Diploma (Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering), an equivalent experience requirement must be met, which equates to a minimum of 6 years’ of Software Development experience
• 3+ years professional mobile development experience with at least 2 years experience in native Android
• Strong Computer Science and programming fundamentals.
• Full understanding of the Android application and activity lifecycles.
• Proficient in building modern, responsive Android interfaces using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and core Android architecture components..
• Appreciation of Android-specific asynchronous processing techniques.
• Knowledge of strategies to handle issues related to platform fragmentation, differing screen sizes and multiple OS versions.
• Knowledge and Appreciation of Android user experience design patterns.

Additional Desirable Skills

• Android Java experience is a bonus.
• Any iOS native development experience is a bonus.
• Experience with network requests to RESTful APIs and using industry-standard libraries.
• Experience working with unit test frameworks
• Experience with writing UI Automation scripts using Robot Framework.
• Experience developing eCommerce apps for retail
• Experience working with software development tools including GitLab, Jira and Confluence.
