Job Purpose

To join a leading, top-ranked, high-energy Equity Research Franchise in a junior analyst role, assisting the lead analyst in the sectors of PGMs, Gold and Oil and Gas. Develop sector coverage over time with the opportunity to develop into a lead role within the bank.

Strong numeracy, analytical, self-starting, creative, and presentation skills are essential. Good Excel skills and attention to detail are critical. Working in a high-pressure environment will be essential.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for broader bank's PGM commodity forecasts, requiring global supply & demand modelling and pricing estimates.
  • Assist the Sector Head in conducting new and innovative research, updating and maintaining models, and sourcing new data sets.
  • Attend roadshows, company results, corporate meetings and site visits with the Sector Head.
  • Respond to bespoke and ad-hoc client requests.
  • Oversee day-to-day activities of the research department, ensuring accuracy and marketable content.
  • Write insightful and impactful research producing a product suite of sector and company notes, thematic and periodic publications, news-flow comments.
  • Develop skills to initiate coverage of relevant stocks in the allocated sectors.
  • Market investment ideas to domestic and offshore global investors through road-show meetings, conference calls, and tele-marketing.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Trading within compliance to optimise marketing and execution of investment ideas.
  • Proactively pass commercial ideas to ECM, DCM, M&A and broader corporate finance functions.
  • Develop sector coverage and product strategy to grow a leading research franchise.
  • Oversee coverage of relevant stocks, maintain up-to-date market data, identify key developments.
  • Oversee development of commercial and differentiated research reports and monitor analysis quality.
  • Distribute research product to counterparts in CIB for lead generation.
  • Organise conferencing and corporate access calendars to link executives and investment managers.
  • Present analysis to enhance the value of CIB Equity Research ideas to clients.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in engineering or mathematical sciences.
  • Field of study: Mathematical Sciences, Mining.
  • 1-2 years of experience preferred.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills with advanced financial modelling and analysis (3-4 years).
  • Experience as a covering or lead analyst on individual equities, ability to develop client relationships (4-6 years).
  • Seasoned asset management and sector experience for assessing investment opportunities within a specific sector universe.

The role is based in Cape Town or Johannesburg offices.
