About the Role

Our client, a leading agricultural service provider in the Paarl region, is seeking a skilled Agricultural Engineer specializing in irrigation systems. This role is critical for designing, implementing, and managing efficient and sustainable irrigation solutions for vineyards and other agricultural enterprises across the Western Cape . The successful candidate will possess a strong engineering background combined with a deep understanding of agricultural water management principles and technologies. You will be responsible for assessing client needs, developing tailored irrigation plans, overseeing installation projects, and providing ongoing technical support to ensure optimal water use efficiency and crop productivity. Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer advanced irrigation systems (drip, micro-sprinkler, etc.) for various agricultural crops, considering water availability, soil type, and climate.
• Conduct site assessments and feasibility studies for new irrigation projects.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for irrigation systems.
• Oversee the installation and commissioning of irrigation systems, ensuring adherence to design specifications and quality standards.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to irrigation system performance.
• Implement and manage water management strategies, including scheduling, monitoring, and reporting on water use efficiency.
• Stay updated on the latest advancements in irrigation technology, water conservation techniques, and relevant regulations.
• Provide technical training and support to farm managers, irrigation technicians, and other stakeholders.
• Collaborate with agronomists and viticulturists to ensure irrigation strategies align with crop requirements.
• Manage project timelines and budgets effectively to ensure successful project delivery.
• Ensure all designs and installations comply with relevant engineering standards and environmental regulations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering with a focus on hydraulics, or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in the design, implementation, and management of agricultural irrigation systems.
• Proven expertise in water management principles, hydraulics, and fluid dynamics.
• Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD) for designing irrigation layouts.
• Strong understanding of soil-water-plant relationships and their impact on irrigation design.
• Experience with different types of irrigation components, pumps, filters, and control systems.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients and technical teams.
• Familiarity with the agricultural landscape and water resource challenges in the Western Cape is essential.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel frequently within the region.
• Professional Engineer (PrEng) or equivalent registration is advantageous.
