Job summary

Alstom is hiring Communications Technicians for the Gauteng region, based at the Gautrain Maintenance Depot in Midrand, Johannesburg. You will conduct preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, testing and cleaning of various communication systems, including CCTV, PABX, PABX, IT networks, and fibre optics.

Role requires a minimum Electronics Engineering Diploma and 5 years in maintenance, with strong problem solving, safety compliance, and ability to work shifts, including weekends

Qualifications

• Minimum Electronics Engineering Diploma.
• Minimum 5 years experience in maintenance environment within one of the above sub-systems.
• Strong administration skills and management of production outputs and planning.
• Basic knowledge of hand tools and fault finding techniques.
• Sound knowledge of relevant safety regulations (Act 85 of OHSA).
• Valid Driver’s license.
• Ability to work independently.
• Certificate of Medical Fitness.
• Capable of working at heights and ability to see in colour (cannot be colour blind).
• Knowledge of various communication systems (beneficial).
• Report writing experience (advantageous).
• Flexibility to work shifts and be on standby (including weekends and public holidays).

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance in accordance with schedules, procedures and technical methods.
• Assess work orders to determine work required and schedule the following week’s plan.
• Form the interface between Comms Maintenance team and relevant contractors.
• Respond to emergencies/breakdowns/failures and restore service quickly.
• Investigate root cause and coordinate resources to avoid recurrence.
• Establish root cause of failures and carry out testing and repairs.
• Undertake regular inspections of communications and IT systems and ensure standards.
• Create CPMs for deviations and coordinate with stakeholders.
• Ensure safety regulations and compliance at all times.
• Communicate with internal stakeholders to share information and progress.
