Job summary

Oakland Zoo seeks a Zoological Manager to lead a multi-species section, oversee daily care, medical management, and animal programs. The role requires guiding staff, volunteers, and interns across several work areas while aligning with departmental strategy and animal welfare standards.

The candidate should have extensive wildlife expertise, proven leadership, and the ability to manage emergencies, budgets, and projects in a dynamic zoo setting.

Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years paid full-time wildlife care experience, AZA/GFAS preferred.
• At least 2 years with primates and 3+ years in a supervisory role.
• Strong knowledge of wildlife natural history, captive management and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Lead management of the animal section, including care, medical and population management.
• Oversee facilities to meet Zoo standards and regulatory requirements.
• Direct emergency response and long-term strategic initiatives.
• Plan and supervise maintenance projects, budgets and timelines.
• Represent the Zoo in public settings and media interactions.
• Coordinate maintenance and operations around animal areas and grounds.
• Manage departmental programs and staff performance across sections.
• Provide string coverage and assist keepers as needed.
• Perform other duties as required.
