Job summary

City of Alexandria Zoo seeks a Veterinary Technician to support the Veterinarian in animal health care, surgical and dental procedures, and routine nursing tasks. You will manage medications, run lab tests, and help maintain medical records for the animal collection.

The role requires an accredited veterinary technology program and licensure, with a path to Louisiana RVT certification within six months. On-site work and periodic public outreach duties are included.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent in veterinary technology required.
• Two years of zoo or related facility experience preferred or two years in animal records management.
• Must possess and maintain Veterinary Technician license; Louisiana RVT certification required within six months.

Responsibilities

• Care for animals and maintain exhibits and grounds in hospital and quarantine areas.
• Assist Veterinarian during surgical and dental procedures.
• Dispense medications and perform lab tests to detect parasites or other health issues.
• Maintain animal records using ZIMS; manage transactions and inventory.
• Provide nursing care to sick or injured animals and assist with vaccines and preventive medicine.
• Assist with feeding, enrichment, and public information during visits.
