Job summary

Compass Connections is hiring for a shelter position at our Casa Mariposa location in El Paso, Texas. The role supports emergency housing for children, requiring bilingual English/Spanish communication and a high school diploma.

The position involves supervising daily activities, maintaining safety, and coordinating with medical and care staff to ensure the well-being of residents. Required are first aid, CPR, and emergency behavior intervention certifications, plus 1 year of related experience

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Preferred: 2-year Associate degree or two years of college in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Meet all federal and state regulatory guidelines and standards applicable to this position.
  • Report all serious incidents and daily activities to the Shelter Manager.
  • Assist with shift schedules and staff assignments to ensure safety of residents and coworkers.
  • Monitor and delegate daily facility operations tasks as needed during the shift.
  • Know procedures for dispensing non-prescription medications when medical staff are not on duty.
  • Supervise interactions to promote positive behavior and daily routines for children.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise activities for children per the daily schedule.
  • Identify maintenance needs and report them to the Shelter Manager.
  • Participate in meetings, training, and team decisions.
  • Assist with household laundry and cleaning of living areas.
  • Maintain records of clothing and personal items.

Hourly Rate:

Hourly Rate: $26.00 per hour

Language Requirements:

Fluency in English and Spanish is required.

Academic Requirements

Required – High school diploma, or equivalent; Preferred – 2-year Associate degree from accredited program/institution, or two or more years of college-level course work in a related field

Certifications

First aid, CPR, Emergency behavior intervention

Work experience:

Required – Minimum of one (1) year of related experience and/or training; preferred – Two (2) plus years of related experience and/or training Compass Connections

Critical Action Items & Measurable Deliverables:
  • Meet all federal and state regulatory guidelines and standards that are applicable to this position.
  • Report all serious incident and daily activities to the Shelter Manager.
  • Assist with the development of shift schedules and staff assignments to ensure the safety of the service population and coworkers.
  • Monitor, coordinate, and delegate daily facility operations tasks as needed throughout the shift.
  • Know the procedures for and monitor proper dispensing of non-prescription medications when medical staff are not on duty.
  • Supervise the general interaction of the service population by promoting positive interaction between children, encouraging children to take on responsibility in the daily routine.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise activities for children in accordance with the daily activity schedule.
  • Identify routine maintenance work/repair and report it to the Shelter Manager.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings, in-service training, and team decisions.
  • Assist in the household laundry of linens, children’s clothing and routine cleaning of bedrooms and living areas.
  • Ensure that records regarding clothing and personal items are maintained and updated in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assume responsibility for scheduling air and ground transportation of the service population when needed.
  • Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed or requested by position supervisor.
  • Implement Compass Connections safety protocols including evacuating with the children and other staff in case of an emergency.
  • Maintain Compass Connections professional and ethical standards of conduct outlined in Compass Connections employee handbook including demonstrating respect for agency staff, children, and community members and complying with required dress code at all times.
Other Responsibilities:
  • Supervise the unit managers assigned to this position and solicit ideas from providing constructive feedback to all supervised staff regarding work habits, communication, and safety.
  • Mentor and assist new hires and coworkers during the general observation training period.
  • Complete timely and accurate documentation in accordance with agency policies and procedures and contract and regulatory requirements and standards.
  • Frequently transverse from one area of the physical plant to another.
  • Meet all deadlines required by program supervisor and federal partners.
Requirements:
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug screens throughout employment.
  • Provide proof of work eligibility status upon request.
  • Pass a pre-employment and biennial criminal background checks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to:
  • Respond sensitively and competently to the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members, service providers and professionals.
  • Provide crisis intervention according to training provided by Compass Connections when needed to maintain a safe environment.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment and maintain emotional control and professional composure at all times.
  • Maintain computer literacy required to meet the responsibilities of the position.
  • Work effectively and without intensive supervision both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of all Compass Connections policies and procedures.
