Job summary

YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg is seeking a YReads! Program Tutor to support literacy instruction for K-5 students across Pinellas County Schools in St.

Petersburg, FL. You will assist the program coordinator and help maintain program integrity by following established procedures and using curriculum-based literacy activities. The role focuses on supervising students, guiding basic reading instruction, and ensuring safety and compliance during after-school sessions.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Interest in learning about literacy intervention.
• Experience working with children in an educational environment.
• Compassion and empathy for struggling readers.
• Tutoring experience strongly preferred.
• Must pass a 10-panel drug screen.
• Clear a Level 2 background check.

Responsibilities

• Assists in student supervision, maintains order, and reinforces good choices.
• Assists students to and from the restroom.
• Assists coordinator in picking up and dropping off students.
• Oversees and ensures required procedures are followed during student pickups.
• Maintains paperwork: testing, sign-in/out logs.
• Teaches basic reading skills using YREADS curriculum.
• Attends abuse risk management training.
• Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
• Adheres to job-specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

Job description

Job Title: YReads! Program Tutor

Job Description: The YReads! Program is an exciting literacy/mentoring initiative for kindergarten through fifth-grade students, taking place at Pinellas County Schools throughout St. Petersburg, FL. The program uses curriculum-based literacy instruction to help struggling readers in areas of phonetics, sight word recognition, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. As a tutor, you would provide assistance and support to the program coordinator during YReads! hours to ensure that outlined program goals and procedures are being achieved.

Duties:

• Assists in student supervision, help maintain order, and positively reinforce "good choices" when appropriate.
• Assists students to and from the restroom.
• Assists coordinator in picking up and dropping off students around the school.
• Oversees and ensures that mandatory procedures are being followed when parents or guardian are picking up students.
• Maintains necessary paper work: testing, volunteer and student sign in and out logs.
• Required to teach basic reading skills using lessons developed by the YREADS Coordinator using all curricula.
• Attends required abuse risk management training.
• Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
• Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

Requirements:

Pay & Perks: Part-time,$15.00 per hour. After school hours, 4 days per week. Approximately 15 hours per week.
