Organization Overview

The Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard Riverside) is a well-established Manhattan community-based agency that supports services to approximately 30,000 NewYorkers. We are two of New York City’s leading human services organizations meeting the needs of children, youth and families, homeless individuals, and older adults throughout Manhattan and NewYorkCity. The Isaacs Center focuses primarily on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth and aging New Yorkers. We operate at community centers located in the neighborhoods of East Harlem and Yorkville, and seek to deliver programs that are impactful, innovative, and intergenerational.

Program Description

Beacon Community Centers are in public schools throughout NewYorkCity and serve youth from kindergarten through age 21 and adults ages 22 and older, including Older Adults. Beacons operate year-round on non-school hours, weekdays, evenings, weekends and in the summer as a resource to the entire community by offering integrated programming tailored to local needs. During the summer, Beacons collaborate with the NewYorkCity Public Schools for the Summer Rising initiative.

Position Summary

The Youth Worker is assigned to assist in planning and facilitating group activities for groups of coed children (grades K-12). They provide a safe and engaging learning environment to promote enrichment, project-based learning, social-emotional competencies, STEM, Theater, Mixed Media Art, Career Awareness, sports, and trips. The program is delivered through a comprehensive menu of services, including group work practices to provide a positive and creative environment for social and intellectual development.

Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties
  • Foster a learning environment that stimulates children’s creative growth and development.
  • Demonstrate professionalism & leadership – be a team member of a group of staff and a group of 25-30 youth in grades K-8.
  • Maintain sound supervision in all activities and ensure the safety of program participants.
  • Assist in delivering recreational and cultural programs to develop community and explore the school year theme through art, games, and varied projects.
  • Build positive relationships with youth and peers, serving as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, behavior, and the organization’s mission, philosophy, and goals.
  • Working with children on developmental and emotional issues.
  • Encourage program participation and development of social skills.
  • Assist in planning and leading lessons, projects, activities, and events.
  • School Year Youth Worker
  • Teach and supervise organized games and assist the activity specialist, escort groups to and from activity areas and field trips and carry out other tasks as directed by Program Coordinator.
  • Enforce program rules, identify, and respond to participant behavior issues, and carry out corrective action when needed by identifying and seeking to resolve conflicts and behavioral problems (including those with staff).
  • Know and enforce ALL emergency procedures and follow safety guidelines associated with all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your children’s safety and whereabouts at all times.
  • Attend staff training, weekly meetings, professional development workshops, and supervision meetings.
  • Other duties as required and assigned by Program Director, Assistant Program Director, and Vice President for Youth Services.
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with children in groups preferred.
  • Must have the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Must have a sense of humor and a passion for youth development.
  • Must be able to pass background checks including Fingerprint Screening.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification is a plus.
